Video shows bystanders ignoring hit-and-run victim

AP:

A 78-year-old man is tossed like a rag doll by a hit-and-run driver and lies motionless on a busy city street as car after car goes by. Pedestrians gawk but appear to do nothing. One driver stops briefly but then pulls back into traffic. A man on a scooter slowly circles the victim before zipping away.

“Like a dog they left him there,” said a disgusted Jose Cordero, 37, who was with friends Thursday not far from where Torres was struck. Robert Luna, who works at a store nearby, said: “Nobody did nothing.”

Kind of crazy right?

  1. it is pretty sad, but can you say were all that surprised? remember that jerry seinfeld episode where they were all arrested for not helping that man getting robbed? well times have changed and probably gotten worse.
i remember asking residents about their neighbor for an article and was appalled to see that many didn’t even know that person’s name — even though they lived there for years.
i guess why people are even more shocked is that this happened in hartford, ct., not somewhere like nyc…

  2. This is actually not too surprising…I read something about this phenomenon, I guess it’s like the herd mentality….if you see somebody hurt or screaming that they got raped etc., then what happens is that people often react based on what they see others doing…so if you see people around u aren’t responding, then u think that maybe nothing serious is really happening.
