US House passes Iraq pullout plan

The House passed a bill on Thursday that would have U.S. troops out of Iraq by December 2009. But don’t count on it happening. From Al Jazeera:

The measure, passed by the Democratic controlled House on Thursday, would also require that soldiers spend only one year in Iraq and then get at least one year at home.

However the vote, won by 227 to 196 in the House, is largely symbolic as it will most likely be defeated once it passes to the US senate.

George Bush, the US president, has vowed to veto any measure that sets a timeline to withdraw US troops from Iraq as part of any funding bill, having done so once last year…

…the Democrats are well short of the two-thirds majorities needed in the House or the senate to overturn a Bush veto in order to change the administration’s Iraq war policy.
