R. Kelly Going on Trial Finally…Maybe

From CNN:

But after six years of repeated delays, jury selection is set to begin Friday in the Grammy-winning R&B singer’s trial on child pornography charges, prompted by a videotape allegedly showing Kelly having sex with a girl as young as 13.

But the trial might have another delay coming:

On Wednesday, defense attorneys filed a motion seeking to postpone the trial again, and the judge could rule on that request Friday. The reasons for the motion are being kept secret…

From the info available to the public at this point, it looks like Kells has a decent shot of beating the case; he denies being the guy in the video and the girl who’s supposedly in the video also  denies that she’s the one in the vid. What we don’t know is if prosecutors are going to be able to tell jurors about other accusations of sex with minors against Kelly. Some of his stats:

Kelly has settled three lawsuits accusing him of having sex with underage girls, filed in 1997, 2001 and 2002. In the third suit, the woman claimed that she began having sex with Kelly when she was 16, and that he forced her to have an abortion.

In 2003, Kelly was arrested in Florida on child pornography charges after investigators said they found photos of him having sex with a girl. Charges were dropped after a judge ruled detectives illegally seized the photographs from a digital camera in his home.

Documents show Kelly secretly married the singer Aaliyah in 1994, when she was 15. The marriage later was annulled by her parents; Aaliyah died in a plane crash in 2001.

I’m a huge R. Kelly fan, although in the last few years the quality of his stuff has declined. He’s facing up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.

  1. Dude — if they married when she was 15, they must have started dating when she was 14. Beyond gross, that is just a f*cked up power dynamic! I don’t care what people say, that I’m patronizing teen girls by saying that they have no agency, f*ck THAT shit! Adults have no biznass f*cking around with minors, male or female.

Talent or no talent, I do not believe peeps should let this fly… I do not believe that R. Kelly should be able to touch the sky… I bet he dreams about it every night and day, yet another underaged girl to lay…

  2. LOL @ ur “I Believe I Can Fly” remix. I dunno, I have mixed feelings about the whole morality of the underage thing. Look, I’m an adult, and it’s ok for me to date someone who’s 18 according to the law. But if she’s 17, maybe a few months shy of 18, all of a sudden I’m a monster who deserves jail time?

I think there’s some gray area here. I mean I think we all can agree that an adult messing around with a 10 yr old or sumthin is wrong. But at 15, fools get tried as adults for murder. So to quote Dave Chappelle (who did a stand up routine on this issue) we need to decide as a society exactly how old 15 is.

BTW, make sure to catch me on next season’s “To Catch a Predator”. ahaha!

  3. I may not agree on the sentencing or time in prison, but it should still be punishable by law. And yes, Pete Doggles, I would judge you for dating an 18 year old, cuz that’s just… WRONG! Look, I even have mad probs with seniors dating freshman at colleges, so there ya go. When it comes to professors dating sophomore students, there’s still a problem that goes beyond dynamics of the classroom.

Really? There’s nothing wrong with a 27 year old dating an 18 year old? REALLY?

In a utopian world, no, age wouldn’t matter. But we live in the US of A and the doctrine of sex that America inculcates is one that is anything but healthy and is rife with creating a culture that is teeming with a bazillion opportunities for exploitation — capital and sexual.

    ::bobblebot sensory overload::

  4. You’re right, I have problems with myself dating 18 yr olds too…they’re too old! ahah I’m kidding. I was just saying that according to the law there’s nothing wrong with it, and I personally don’t think it’s automatically wrong either. Yes, it CAN be an exploitative situation, but I don’t think it is necessarily…

Wow, you have probs with college seniors and freshmen dating? Well, you’re definitely entitled to your opinion, but I’m curious, what do you consider to be a respectable age difference?

All I’m really saying is that I think the age of consent is pretty arbitrary and I don’t see it as some immutable line that it’s absolutely immoral to cross. Not that I plan to cross it, I’m not tryin to get locked up, but you get what I’m tryin to say.

  5. it’s not the age so much as where you are in life.

for example, a 6th grader dating a 3rd grader is just disturbing because the 6th grader is on the brink of puberty, probably experimenting with masturbation, etc., and — dude, it’s only a 3 year difference if you think about it. Or a 4th grader and 7th grader. Not creeped out?

why the freshman/senior dynamic disturbs me is because MOST (won’t say allllllllllll) but MOST newbie freshmen really are newbie, fresh babies, straight outta high school. they’re still naive, young, and not even sure of who they are yet. think about you freshman year, and you senior year. world of difference, no?

looking back to my first experience with alcohol, it was freshman year of college with a bunch of heteromale juniors and seniors. and a beer bong. i was new, young, wanted to make friends, and didn’t want to seem “uncool” so I chug-chug-chugged it. no, I was not sexually molested, but me, armed with another freshman friend who was even dumber than myself, could have gotten into a potentially dangerous situation. but when you’re young and stupid, you don’t know these things. the point is, that these seniors and juniors probably did.

and why they made a point to invite only 4 freshman girls to a party of 8 junior and senior men is beyond me.

yes, it is about age difference, and no, it’s not. It’s about where you are. Adult dating a teen is different from an adult dating an adult. (And 18 may be legally adult, but we’re still kids then, too.) Maybe the decade (OR MORE) of difference between Aaliyah and R. Kelly wouldn’t be as big a deal today were she still alive (cuz she’d be more of an adult, more fully formed in her sense of agency and autonomy), but when she’s 14 and just barely got her period… sorry. Dude, I worked with 14 year old girls, and if I saw them with a 28-year-old, ugh. sorry, I’m so not down with that.

  6. I see what you’re saying, thanks for explaining. I don’t think it’s cool to exploit or prey on people, but I think where I disagree with you is that I think a freshman and senior (or some other age difference) could have an honest thing for each other that isn’t about exploitation. I’m not ready to categorically denounce it. Jeez Alice, stop shooting down my teen queen fantasies!!! Quit being the sexist ageist u are!!!!!!!
