Afghans condemn ‘insults’ to Islam

Remember a couple of years ago, a Danish newspaper published some cartoons poking fun at Islam and the Prophet Mohammed, and some Muslims in the Middle East went buckwild? Well, recently, the cartoons were reprinted in Denmark to send a message that their press will not be intimidated by fanatical violence. Some Afghans weren’t happy:

Thousands of Afghans have taken part in a second day of protests against the reprinting of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad in Danish newspapers and a Dutch film that reportedly criticises the Quran…

…”We want the government of Denmark and Holland to arrest and bring to justice all those who are insulting Islam,” one of the organisers of Sunday’s protest said…

…On Tuesday, in the capital Kabul, about 200 politicians shouted “Death to the enemies of Islam” outside the country’s parliament. (article)

Some of the protesters want troops from Denmark and Holland (working with Nato) to leave immediately. According to one of these protesters,

“If these forces do not leave, we are prepared to carry out suicide attacks against them.”

Religious extremism and the conditions which give rise to it = all bad.
